You May Not Always Get What You Want But You Usually Get What You Expect!

Desires versus expectations. Desires are what we want to see manifest in our life. They can be tangible like a car or a house or more money and they can also be spiritual or psychological like love, joy or being at peace. The important balance is whether deep down inside do we really believe that we expect this to manifest into our life or do we believe that we do not expect this to manifest in our life? Our expectation is more important than our desire. Our expectation is based on beliefs that reside deep in our sub-conscious mind. We all hold our own beliefs to be true, even if they are not.

Many beliefs, perhaps even most of them are only opinions that we have decided to believe are true, like a fact. Some beliefs or opinions are global and some are situational. It is our beliefs or opinions that set our true expectations not our wants, desires or wishes. Many people want or desire good things for themselves but deep down inside do not expect them to happen. Unless we deal with the limiting belief we will have difficulty manifesting what we want. A real life case in point follows:

I was talking to a friend (who shall remain nameless) in Texas last week and he began to explain all the trouble and problems he was having getting a new fancy phone with all the bells and whistles. I am not technologically advanced with cell phones to know about all the issues he was having but apparently he had spent the better part of two days trying to cure the ills of the cell phone and the provider. Something about locks and not being able to transfer numbers and a bunch of other stuff I knew absolutely nothing about. About 15 minutes into the diatribe I gently injected “What were you expecting when you walked in the first time, a good experience or a bad experience?” and he replied, “I’ve always had problems with cell phones and cell phone companies, why should ____ be any different?” I then asked, “What was it that you wanted when you walked in? And he said, “A new phone and cell number that worked so I can get my emails and surf the web from the phone.”

I then said “So you expected to have problems before you even walked in, right? And he said “Uh huh, I guess so.” I have been friends with this person for many years and he knows the Law of Attraction as we have spent many hours discussing it so I couldn’t help giggling a little as I asked the next question. “Is it possible that you walked in expecting problems and you got what you expected?” And he said “Hum, based on what you’ve taught me, that makes sense.” At this point we are at the beginning of day three in cell phone limbo for my friend.

To take it a step further I asked my buddy “Is your belief that you will have trouble with cell phone companies a fact or an opinion.” He responded, “Well it’s a fact. I have had problems with other companies.” “Alright”, I said, “Is it global or situational? And he asked, “What do you mean?” I then explained that a global fact is one that is true in every situation no matter what. A situational fact is true in some situations and not in others and may be only an opinion. Let me ask you this, “Have you had problems with every contact and interaction you have had with cell phone companies?” He said, “No. Some things went smoothly in the past.”

“Even though some interactions with cell phone companies have gone well and smoothly, why would you choose to believe that things will go wrong in this situation?” And he said, “I don’t know, I guess that’s what I expected. I wasn’t thinking positively.”

I assured him that all will be as well as he believes it will be and suggested that before he goes to the cell phone store that he re-set his intention for the situation by envisioning everything working out as well or better than he wanted and then to declare the intention and outcome out loud in an affirmation and to hold that picture and positive emotion in his mind as he went to the cell phone store.

Needless to say I got a call from him later that day on his new cell phone; as a matter of fact it was a really new cell phone. He had done what I suggested and said it was like he was dealing with different people. For whatever reason they could not get his old new phone to work so they gave him a brand new model, got his email and browser working and tossed in some freebies for his trouble. Attitude truly is everything!

The lesson from this story is often our desires or what we want in situations is different from our expectations. In those cases I have found that the expectation is the most likely outcome. Think about re-setting your intentions and expectations whenever you find yourself desiring a good outcome but expecting a bad outcome.

You can usually tell when that is the case when you get that feeling in the pit of your stomach that this is going to be difficult or there may be a problem or the outcome might not be in your favor. This happens in everyday situations such as when the boss, or your spouse or a child says they need to talk to you. It might be taking something back to a store or dealing with a computer issue. If your first reaction is “Oh no!” you are probably unconsciously expecting negative results or outcomes and it can be you trigger to change what you are thinking and imagining. Are you reacting to the request in fear and expecting negatives or are you approaching it with a positive attitude?

Set the intention you want and create the vision of the outcome you want, express it verbally and focus on the outcome until it feels good then go and engage the situation with a different expectation and see if the results aren’t better. It takes less time to do it than read about it. If nothing else, you will be in a better mood and have positive feelings and vibes working for you.
